The automobile industry in India is one of the largest in the world and is only growing with time. The South Korean automaker, Hyundai is one of the key players in the Indian automobile industry and is among one of the largest manufacturers in India apart from competitors like Mahindra, Ford, Tata Motors and Maruti Suzuki.
When the South Korean motor company entered the Indian market, they were virtually unknown here in India. On fact, the country was itself seeing a metamorphosis in passenger vehicles, with automakers suddenly paying attention to this segment.
During that time, in 1996, the automobile industry was dominated by few companies mostly Indian and some joint venture automakers like Maruti Suzuki, Hindustan Motors, Premier Automobiles, Tata Motors and Mahindra. Automakers like Ford, Opel and Honda were fairly new to the market and were also relatively new.
From among these few automakers, it was Maruti who had a lion’s share of the market; Maruti monopolized the passenger car sector while other manufacturers like Tata Motors and Mahindra & Mahindra were concentrating on their profitable utility and commercial vehicles at that point in time. The first car launched by Hyundai was a roaring success right from when it hit Indian roads. The market acceptance and the promising sales of Hyundai Santro is what paved the road of success for Hyundai. Since then they have been unstoppable.
At present, some of the models that Hyundai manufactures are the Eon, i10, Grand i10, Xcent, Elite i20, Active i20, Verna Fluidic 4S, Neo Elantra, Creta and the Santa Fe. All said, in order to commemorate their strong, growing presence in India for the last two decades, the South Korean manufacturer decided to launch a Special Edition of the Grand i10 vehicle.
