The Kia SP Concept was recently shown at the 2018 Auto Expo and has generated considerable interest amongst customers. This will be the car that will herald Kia Motors’ foray into the Indian market in 2019. The Kia SP Concept’s production version will initially be a 5-seater model but later on, depending on customer feedback, a 7-seater version could be introduced according to Han-Woo Park, the President at Kia.
The platform of the SP Concept will be able to spawn a 7-seater variant according to him. This is the same platform that will be used for manufacturing the new generation Hyundai Creta which could also come with a 7-seater version as per reports. The production version will be produced at the company’s manufacturing unit at Anantapur in Andhra Pradesh. The annual production capacity is expected to stand at 3 lakh units annually.
Production could commence from September 2019 with the Indian launch before Diwali or sometime in October 2019. The global launch may take place after the Indian unveiling. Kia Motors will follow up the SP Concept’s production model with a smaller SUV and a premium hatchback. The small SUV is likely to be a sub-4m vehicle that will compete with rivals like the Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza and Ford EcoSport.
