BMW has officially released teaser images of its new flagship 8-Series model which will take on the likes of the Bentley Continental GT and the Mercedes-Benz S-Class Coupe globally. The production model has been shown officially and has been extensively tested for endurance at Aprilia and several tweaks have been executed, particularly for the driving dynamics. The official unveiling is expected within the next few months as well. The 8-Series draws inspiration from the Concept 8-Series and gets a few design features which are similar to the 6-Series as well.
The 8-Series may actually be a two door coupe version of the 7-Series model. There will be shared engines and naming guidelines. The iPerformance plug-in hybrid version may be available in the lineup while there may be the 6 cylinder 3.0 litre diesel model from the 730d for the 830d. The 8-Series range may also get the V8 4.4 litre engine from the 750i XDrive and AWD. There will also be a model with the V12 which may be produced later in the lifecycle of the 8-Series.
There will also be the M8 version of the car with new bodywork and an upgraded variant of the twin-turbocharged 4.4 litre V8 600 hp engine. There will be the same M xDrive 4WD system shared for this version as well. There will be similar features and technologies like the 7-Series inclusive of new generation semi-autonomous features. The 8-Series coupe will substitute the 6-Series coupe, production for which will conclude in the year 2018 while the 6-Series convertible will be swapped for the 8-Series convertible in 2019 as per reports. The Gran Coupe version of the 6-Series may be kept by BMW or phased out.
