Tata Aria - A Preface

Tata Aria is a neat combination of an SUV, MPV and a sedan. This crossover SUV was first launched in the Auto Expo 2010. Its design theme was developed in association with its British subsidiary, JLR. As a result, its design theme was in a way created to appeal to both Indian and global markets. Subsequently, a revamped version of the Tata Aria was also released. The vehicle traces its origins to a range of concept cars that Tata had envisioned and showcased at the Geneva Auto Show, way back in the year 2000. The Aria is typically a crossover SUV which the automaker, Tata Motors perceived to be an interesting market segment and therefore designed a vehicle that had the qualities of an SUV and a MPV in it. And therefore, the Aria was made available in two drivetrain variants, the 4WD and the 2WD. The vehicle is not only retailed here in India but also exported to a number of countries across the globe.

Tata Aria - Exterior

The Tata Aria’s exteriors definitely radiate qualities of a neat crossover SUV. The characteristic Tata design grille is present in the Aria too. But still it has its own distinctiveness. Ingress and egress into the vehicle has been made easy, thanks to the ergonomically oriented design theme. Therefore, we don’t have to really climb into or exit from the vehicle; it is a lot easier than that. Overall, the Aria’s exterior does have a touch of premium on it.

Tata Aria

Compares and Contrasts

• While airbags are present in a Mahindra XUV500, the same is not featured in the Tata Aria.
• When it comes to boot space, Tata Aria takes the cake as it has a lot more boot space than the XUV500 and ground clearance too is better in the Tata Aria.
• When it comes to variants’ the Mahindra XUV500 has a lot more variants to choose from as compared to the Tata Aria which offers just three variants.
• Also both manual and automatic transmissions are offered in the XUV500, and the Aria comes only with a manual transmission.
• Pricing-wise, the Tata Aria seems a shade cheaper or lesser than the XUV500.
• Airbags and ABS are not offered in the Aria but it is offered in the XUV500.
• Mileage offered and top speeds in both the vehicles are comparable and almost similar.

And the IBB Verdict is.....

Yes. Both the vehicles, the Mahindra XUV500 and the Tata Aria are two different vehicles with different renderings, style, performance levels, engine makeup, and design. Yet, if we were to compare the two, the Mahindra XUV500 seems to be better equipped and has a lot more going in its favor as compared to the Tata Aria and therefore, owing to all this and more, the verdict rules in favor of the XUV500 when the comparison is directly with the Tata Aria. The XUV500 is a much more compact and well-intentioned vehicle as compared to the Tata Aria as the crossover SUV, the Aria has nothing new to offer or it is not starkly different from the many other crossover SUVs in the market whereas, the XUV500 has maintained its presence and is popular and is retailing well too. Owing to this popularity itself, the company has introduced the AMT version recently and is soon planning to unveil a Hybrid version of this vehicle in the market which will definitely be the first manual SUV Hybrid released ever. And this says a lot about the XUV500 and how it has a brand positioning by itself.
