Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza - A Preface

The Indian auto market is flush with a flurry of vehicles in the new segment, the SUV crossover segment. This is now becoming an intensely contested segment with most automakers definitely making a beeline with their own rendering of a crossover SUV into the ring. The SUV market has been on an upswing and to appeal to an even larger audience, automakers devised smaller, SUVs that were typically larger hatchbacks but had the complete look and feel of an SUV and thus came about the crossover SUV.

And with most automakers already doing well in the segment, Maruti Suzuki too introduced a new crossover SUV, the Maruti Vitara Brezza. The first Maruti Suzuki India localized vehicle, this was first debuted in the Auto Expo 2016. The vehicle will be ‘Made in India’ and exported to other countries. The Vitara brand for Maruti Suzuki has been quite success and therefore, even the Vitara Brezza is also seemingly looking to be quite a head turner in the auto circles today. With the launch of this vehicle, Maruti Suzuki, which is already India’s leading automobile company, it is looking to grow its reputation and stature with a repertoire of vehicles.

Tata Sumo Gold - A Preface

The Tata Sumo is one of the earliest home-produced SUVs made by the homegrown automaker, Tata Groups. And it was well-received and popular both in the urban and rural communities and used more as a multi-people carrier and was regarded for its sturdy finish and performance.

And over time, ever since its release over two decades ago, the automaker released many newer versions in the market and the Tata Sumo Gold is also one such version. This multi utility vehicle finds its place and usage in many areas and its suspension, comfort, offroading capabilities and ruggedness makes it quite endearing. Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza - Exterior

The new, attractive, yet, aggressive looking, crossover SUV, the Maruti Vitara Brezza is unlike any previously released Maruti vehicles. The exterior design is proportionate and it gives a nice stance to it. The front grille is different and a departure from Maruti’s traditional signature double chrome slat design. The front headlamps feature a smoked touch to it. The roofs showcase a sloping effect and the rear of the car seems to blend well with the overall design theme.

Tata Sumo Gold - Exterior

The exterior design of the Tata Sumo Gold sticks to its original design and the automaker hasn’t deviated from it irrespective of the different iterations that hit the market. The MUV is tall and butch-like. The vehicle has a certain sense of rigidity that has consistently stayed through in all the versions and this is one commonality that runs through all of them. It has a clean, old-fashioned build and presence and has sustained and held its ground Yes, the looks are more evolved and hold its own appeal and haven’t veered off a lot from its basic design core. The roofline is high and the overall design premise is simple and to the point.

Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza - Interiors

The interiors of the Maruti Vitara Brezza are very inviting and come with a range of tailor-made options. There is good room to seat the 5 occupants and spacing is good including the design, ride quality, the latest in infotainment features, comfort and safety elements. The overall color coordination is eye-catching. There seems to be a seamless blending of the dashboard into the overall design. The instrument cluster too looks different and nice and the seating too is ergonomically inclined. With good support and adequate boot space, this definitely makes for a well-designed crossover SUV.

Tata Sumo Gold - Interiors

The ergonomic seating in the Tata Sumo Gold is large and accommodates all its occupants comfortably. The interiors are set in black linen and the instrument cluster and all features are well-aligned and neatly placed. The fuel indicator depicting low fuel is definitely helpful and also all safety features are also in place. The steering wheel and its mechanism is common to Tata and is definitely comfortable and safe too. Convenient storage spaces, and power windows definitely adds a touch.

Compares and Contrasts

• Both the Maruti Vitara Brezza and the Tata Sumo Gold offer seven variants each.
• The Vitara Brezza is more contemporary in looks, design, and performance as compared to the Tata Sumo Gold.
• The boot space of the Tata Sumo Gold even though a full-fledged MUV/SUV isn’t as much as the Vitara Brezza.
• Fuel efficiency definitely goes the Vitara Brezza way, as its fuel efficiency is way more than the Sumo Gold.
• Top speed and acceleration from standstill to a 100kmph is faster and higher in the Vitara Brezza as compared to the Sumo Gold.
• The ground clearance is better in the Tata Sumo Gold as compared to the Vitara Brezza.

And the IBB Verdict is...

We are not voting in favor of the Maruti Vitara Brezza just because it is a newer or more contemporary-looking vehicle. But instead, when compared to the Tata Sumo Gold, it is well-designed, fully packaged, and is more performance-oriented. Thoughtful features, elements, the fuel efficiency, the latest features, and many more positives strike in favor of the Vitara Brezza. The Tata Sumo Gold on the other hand, even though had a couple facelifts, didn’t really strive to crossover from its old-fashioned stance, but instead stuck to the original design plot. That is proves to be its major undoing. And not to miss, the fact that the Vitara Brezza, a new crossover SUV from the house of Maruti is a new entrant but is already creating the right buzz around it and the growing booking figures stand testimony to it.
