On May 18th 2016, we saw the release of an updated version of the Maruti Suzuki Alto 800.This has been the first facelift since the launch of the Alto 800 in the year 2012.
Insight into the updates of the facelifted version of the Maruti Suzuki Alto 800:
- Fuel-efficiency figures of 24.7kmpl in the petrol version against the earlier car’s 22.7kmpl (a clear improvement of about 9%).
- The CNG model’s fuel efficiency is said to be 10% more than the predecessor at a whopping 33.4kmpl.
- To improve the braking, a new brake booster has been introduced.
- The changes to the exterior are a smaller nose grille, redesigned headlamps, new bumpers and provision for fog lamps.
- The interior updates include new seat fabric and additional storage space in the doorpads. Higher models get combined headrest for the rear seats.
- Child safety locks on the back doors.
- Two new colour options are added – Mojito Green and Cerulean Blue.
- In the future, an AMT gearbox will be introduced which is sure to take this car’s game to the next level.
- The exterior now has a slimmer and longer grille and a lower grille which is in a trapezoidal shape – this is called the Aero Edge design by manufacturers.
- Some striking updates which have been made current are the remote keyless entry, storage space like the bottle holder in the rear and map pocket in the front occupant's side.
And what more has been added to make it all the more desirable?
Let’s take a peek into the exteriors, interiors and engine to check the level of desirability. The new version of the Alto 800 is more affordable. It is priced between INR 2.57 lakhs and INR 3.78 lakhs depending upon the variant you choose. The engine present in the updated car is similar to the old one. A 796cc F8D engine coupled to a 5-speed manual gearbox. The engine produces 47.65PS or a top power at 6000rpm and a torque 69Nm at 3500rpm. Currently, only a petrol and CNG versions are available. Maruti has been criticized for its dull, bland and safe design in the past. Looking to spice things up, mild changes have been made to the exterior and this new design is sure to surpass its previous model.
The altered façade of the front now dons redesigned headlamps and front grille. The slimmer headlamp design is called Aero Edge Design by the manufacturer. The shape has been reformed to include the trapezoidal shape where the headlamps are more square and sharp with vivid character lines on the bonnet. Unlike the front, the side and rear figures remain unchanged. The amended exterior now gets a provision for fog lamps. Due to all the development, dimensionally the vehicle size has increased in length to 3430 mm which is 35 mm longer than its predecessor. Other measurements stand at 1490 mm of width, 1475mm of height and 2360mm of wheelbase which remain unaffected. With a ground clearance of 160mm and turning radius of 4.6 meters, the weight of the vehicle is about 725 kilograms.
The interior cabin has been updated and now introduces new upholstery fabric for the seats and door pads and added storage space in the backend. Standard features which come with this car are full wheel covers, a rear spoiler, power windows for the front and central locking.
The safety features encompass front air bags in the driver side starting from the base trim. There will also be provisions for child safety lock in the base and trim versions. There have been some transitions under the hood too. The engine architecture has been bolstered up in order to experience heightened driving pleasure and improved fuel efficiency.Apart from the existing shades like superior white, silky silver, granite grey and blazing red, two new colours are introduced which are Cerulean Blue and Mojito Green.It is agreeable that alterations made are very minor but there are some pronounced changes which make the car look much bolder and more aggressive than before.

Maruti Suzuki Alto 800 is an important car as it’s endowed with carrying the legacy of two relevant cars in the history of Maruti which have been the bread and butter of the manufacturer for the past 30 years – Maruti 800 and Maruti Alto. The 800 was presented to the market 26 years ago and the Alto about 9 years ago. The alliance of the two were received with great zeal and set out to be true to the saying, "India on wheels".
