Fuel prices touch their highest levels in India

Fuel prices have risen to record levels in India. On the 19th of May, 2018, 1 litre of petrol was being sold at Rs. 83.75 while this was Rs. 71.67 for a litre of diesel. On the 21st of May, 2018, the prices of petrol are now Rs. 84.40 per litre in Mumbai and Rs. 72.21 for 1 litre of diesel. The difference between petrol and diesel is only Rs. 12.19 per litre in the financial capital of the country. This is the highest level touched by petrol ever since the high of Rs. 83.62 per litre in September 14, 2013.

In Delhi, petrol is priced at Rs. 76.57 while in Kolkata it is Rs. 79.24. In Chennai, the price per litre of petrol is Rs. 79.47. Prices of petrol and diesel have increased by Rs. 1.92 and Rs. 2.01 per litre respectively in the week from the 14th of May 2018. Rs. 82.07 per litre was the highest for petrol in the year 2014. The lowest was on the 10th of March, 2016, which was Rs. 62.75 per litre. Over the last two years, according to reports, petrol prices have never come down below Rs. 65 per litre. In 2017, petrol was priced at Rs. 76.91 per litre and the highest was Rs. 79.99 per litre on the 3rd of October, 2017. The lowest was Rs. 72.66 per litre on the 1st of April, 2017.

The earlier highest threshold for diesel was Rs. 67.26 per litre on the 31st of August, 2014 in Mumbai. Delhi and Kolkata now have diesel prices of Rs. 67.82 and Rs. 70.37 per litre. In Chennai, the price of diesel per litre is Rs. 71.59. The diesel prices were Rs. 53.06 per litre on 10th March 2016 in Mumbai and the prices have risen steadily with Rs. 55 being the minimum pricing ever since. India has the highest selling rates for diesel and petrol amongst South Asian countries.
