Here’s what you need to know about the 2018 Jeep Wrangler

Jeep has officially unveiled the 2018 Wrangler at a private event prior to the popular Los Angeles Auto Show and the iconic SUV takes things a bit further with this new generation model. The Wrangler will come in Rubicon and Sahara variants with several upgrades for the interior and exterior alike. The 2018 Jeep Wrangler will eventually get an Indian launch as well and will have both diesel and petrol engines. The new Wrangler comes with a lighter platform which is also bigger and there is the famous 7-slat grille with a curved slot. The new grille is more angled which is a neat touch and there are full-L.ED headlamps for top-end variants in tandem with in-built LED daytime running lights on the front fender. There is a halo LED daytime running light for the headlight as well.

There are redesigned fender flares and the fender is slightly vented with unique design elements. The new design enhances functionality while ensuring an improved stance for the Wrangler. The three door Rubicon variant comes with a vented bonnet which enhances the aggressiveness of the Wrangler. The Wrangler has a windscreen which is slightly more raked and there is an in-built rear spoiler as well. The rear has been revamped with a spare tyre mounted on the tailgate and a reversing camera. There is a new LED lamp cluster for the rear and the tailgate is now bigger than before. The number plate has been shifted to the rear bumper.

The Wrangler Sahara gets 18 inch alloy wheels while there are 17 inch wheels for other versions. The Rubicon comes with a new metal bumper with removable ends for enhanced entry and approach angles and the famous red cast tow hooks which are seen for the Trailhawk version. The fit and finish has improved, particularly for the four door Wrangler. There is a big touch screen infotainment setup and the top-end model comes with higher resolution and more features like Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, satellite radio and navigation. There is a huge information screen for the instrument cluster as well.

There are mechanically adjustable seats and the new Wrangler offers more space inside than the present model. There are leather or cloth seat options and there is also a new body colour for the roll cage instead of black vinyl wrapping. There is a new design for the dashboard and one can choose red or silver painted panels or leather wrapping. There is a red interior package on offer for the Rubicon as well.

The wheelbase is longer and this leads to more legroom and there are hard top and soft top versions of the Wrangler. The Wrangler will get both manual and powered roof options. The doors can be easily taken off as well. There will be a tubed accessory offered by Jeep next year in its Mopar catalogue for this purpose as well. The Wrangler is lighter and the bonnet, doors and fenders are crafted from aluminum while the main body is made from steel. The tail gate structure makes use of light weight magnesium and there is four wheel drive as a standard feature.

There are differential locks which can be turned on by the electronic switch on the console and a button for de-linking sway bars. There will be four wheel drive high and low modes available along with the new auto mode. There will be front and rear skid plates and built-in tow hooks for the Wrangler. Some models may get removable bumper caps and there is 276 mm of overall ground clearance in tandem with 44 degree and 37 degree approach and departure angles respectively. There will be the first ever 33-inch tyre package offered for the 17-inch off-road wheel for the Wrangler. Also, 30 inches is the SUV’s water fording capacity.

 The four cylinder 2.2 litre petrol turbocharged engine with hybrid technology will be used for the Jeep Wrangler. The Wrangler will get a V6 3.6 litre naturally aspirated Pentastar engine which will be used for the petrol top-end model. There may be a diesel 2.2 litre engine used for global markets while there may be a 3 litre engine used for the United States market. This is the same diesel engine used for the Grand Cherokee in the Indian market. The Jeep Wrangler will have an 8-speed automatic transmission option and there will be no manual transmission options available.
