The craze for sleek and stylish sports cars hit a down slope as the demand for brawny heavy SUVs rise steeply among the Indian consumers. In recent times, compact SUVs are yet another category that have gained much appreciation in the Indian market.
It is already known to most that the automobile Industry has reeled in a major sales growth in 2017, among which the passenger vehicle category and the commercial car category gathered a significant growth. Combining the sales of all the registered vehicle categories across all the manufacturing companies, the nation saw a growth of 36.39 per cent, with sales rising from 12,21,969 units to 16,66,646 units during the fiscal year 2016-2017. Amongst which, commercial car sales was boosted by a growth of 56.62 per cent and passenger vehicle sales by a growth of 5.22 per cent (with an increased sales of 2,39,712 units from 2,27,823 units).

Such steep growth of passenger vehicles in the Indian market was nothing short of a dream, until the rise in demand for SUVs, when the dream effectively materialized. The SUV sales during the fiscal year 2016-2017 reached a growth of 29.91 percent with a sales count of 761, 997 units. The sky-shooting of SUV sales single-handedly pulled along with it the sales of passenger vehicles.
When we closely observe the passenger vehicle sales growth, SUV sales growth and passenger car sales growth from 2011 to 2017, we will realize that SUV sales growth, in reality is the catalyst that fuels the growth of other two. During the fiscal year 2011-2012, passenger vehicles reached a sales count of 2,618,072, with a growth of 4.66 per cent. On this particular year passenger cars marked a sales count of 2,016,115 units with a growth of 2.16 per cent. Finally SUVs during the year 2011-2012 achieved a sales growth of 14.01 per cent with 367,012 units sold. In the fiscal year 2014-2015, passenger vehicles saw a sales growth of 3.90 per cent with 2,601,111 units sold, whereas, the passenger car category accumulated a total sales of 1,876, 017 units whilst securing a growth of 1.67 per cent. The SUV sales for this year was 553,699 units with a growth of 21.28 per cent. Finally for the fiscal year 2016-2017, SUV sales count reached a mark of761,997 units with a growth of 29.91 percent. The passenger vehicle selling out 3,046,727 units, secured a growth of 9.16 per cent, and the passenger car category attaining a growth of 3.82 percent, sold a total of 2,102,996 units. Now, notice, how irrespective of the growth of passenger vehicles and passenger cars, SUV growth rate continues to rise and significantly. Further, when looking at the total units sold, SUVs eat up a major share of total sold units in both passenger vehicles and passenger car categories.
The game-changing vehicles in the SUV category are:
- Vitara Brezza, the highest selling SUV of the year with over 100,000 units sold in less than a year.
- Hyundai Creta, the 2nd highest selling SUV of the year with over 150,000 units sold in just 21 months.
- The two major urban MPVs Maruti Ertiga and Toyota Innova have always been a popular choice and have always comprised a major share in their band's total sales.
