When it comes to the ultimate chauffeur driven cars above 1 crore Indian Rupees only two cars come to your mind, the Mercedes-Benz S-Class and the BMW 7-series. All and sundry including the Bavarian Motor Works knows locking horn with the three-pointed S-Class requires a lot of clout and intelligence. This makes the 7-Series a hugely important car for BMW. This limo is pretty big and looks identical to the old one. However, BMW has done a lot of work beneath the bodywork.
Check BMW 7 Series Overview
The sixth generation 730Ld is bigger in overall dimensions, however, BMW could manage to make this one 105 Kgs lighter than the outgoing model. BMW made use of the techniques borrowed from the i3 and i8 to shave out almost 40 Kgs from the 7’s chassis. Wise use of high-strength steel, aluminium and Carbon Fibre Reinforced Plastic (CFRP) helped BMW to save weight on the new 7 Series. BMW has also added a lot of interesting gizmos, we will be deliberating on the same elsewhere in the review.
The new 7 looks sportier and dynamic than the outgoing one. Upfront you get the familiar but large BMW-signature kidney-shaped grill and the halo ring headlamps. The full LED headlights seamlessly fuse with the grill. BMW also offer optional laser lights and automatic high beam operations. The kidney grille can be fitted with active flaps that regulate the air flow depending on the breathing requirements of the engine. The styling doesn’t hide the size of the car and the Luxo-barge silhouette is prominent from the sides. The chrome strip on the sides and the signature Hofmeister kink in the window lines are the major design elements on the side profile.
The basic architecture of the dashboard remains same. The car has a black plus beige combination inside. Lacquered wood, aluminium inserts, and double stitched leather gives the premium look and feel to the 7’s cabin. Buyers can opt for four-zone climate control, rear seat entertainment and fitness systems, adjustable ambient lighting and a rear 7-inch touch command tablet that can control many features of the car sitting at the back (No, you cannot bye-pass the chauffeur and do the back-seat driving). Other options include the Sky Lounge Panorama glass roof that not only allows passengers to enjoy sunlight during the day but also has inbuilt LEDs to simulate a star-lit sky. The car is equipped with a Bowers & Wilkins Diamond surround sound system with a 10-channel amplifier, 16 speakers and a total output of 1400W. The central console is dominated by the touch-screen infotainment system, which can also be controlled by hand gestures.
The car is equipped with a 360-degree camera that generates 3-D images, which is not only ultra-cool but also aids in parking in tight spots. The front seats are huge and comfortable, however, it is neither ventilated nor has massage facility. The front seats can be heated. Massively comfortable rear seat is the highlight of the car. The seats offer a lot of adjustments to suit your comfort. The seat also has the massage facility.
Engine and Performance
The 730 Ld is powered by a 3.0 Liter straight 6-Cylinder turbocharged unit. The diesel engine generates 265 bhp and a peak torque of 620 Nm and mated to an 8-speed auto transmission gearbox. On manual mode, the gears hold up to 5600 rpm and the car is enjoyable in the 2000-5000 rpm power band.
The car has five pre-set driving modes: Eco-pro, Comfort, Comfort plus, Sport and Sport Plus, each modes getting predefined engine and suspension settings. Also, you can mix and match these modes to the driver’s liking. The fuel efficiency ranges from 7.8 Kmpl in the city to 12 kmpl on the highway.
Ride and Handling
Air suspension and adaptive dampers are standard which results in improved ride quality. However, for ride quality, S-Class still remains the benchmark. The electrical steering is light at low speeds and builds weight nicely as the speeds build up.
