The ending of the fiscal year 2018 has been a particularly good one for automobile companies with the hike in sales figures of the passenger vehicles for most of them. The total sales figure increased by about 7.89 % to reach 3,287,965 units this year. This is the second time in a row that the 3 million mark has been crossed in a fiscal year. There has been a particular hike in the demand of SUVs, particularly compact SUV. The utility vehicles alone saw a hike by 20% reaching a sale tally of about 921,780 vehicles in FY2018 which accounted for about for 28.03 percent of overall passenger vehicle and is expected to cross the 1 million mark by FY2019.
India’s most sought after car company, Maruti Suzuki, has sold about 16,43,467 units this year which is about 13.8% more than last year’s figure of 14,43,641 units. The highest sales have been made by Alto and WagonR, who have jointly sold 4,27,183 units. For Maruti Suzuki the sales figures of UVs, like Vitara Brezza, S-Cross, Ertiga and Gypsy, stands at 2,53,759 units jointly. Compact cars like Swift, Baleno, Ignis, Celerio and Dzire have jointly made a sale of 7,48,475 units which is about 28% more than last year.
Hyundai’s sales figures saw a hike by 7.26% with the total sale tally reading 48,009 units in March 2018. In the complete FY2018 the company sold 5,36,241 units, which is 5.2% more than the previous year. The top UV of the company, Hyundai Creta crossed the overall figure of 2,50,000 milestone in March.
Mahindra’s total PV and UV sales stood at 2,49,505 units and 2,33,915 units respectively. The last quarter of the year has proven to be the best for the company. This year also promises to be a good one for the company with many new cars lined up for launch including EVs.
It has been a good year for Tata Motors with the launch of new products like Tiago hatchback, Tigor and Nexon crossover. The FY2018 saw a total sales tally reach 1,87,321 units for Tata cars which is a 22% hike from last year.
Honda managed a total sales of 1,70,026 cars in 2018 FY with Honda City and Honda WR-V accounting for the majority of the sales. The City sold a total of 56,162 units this year.
Toyota however was not as fortunate as the others and in fact saw a drop in sales figure by 1.9%. Around 1,40,645 units of Toyota cars were sold in the fiscal year 2018. They are hoping that upcoming launch of Toyota Yaris would help the company improve the sales figure next year.
Ford too saw a drop in sales by 1.46% and has sold 90,062 units. The EcoSport has been the most popular car in terms of sale. The upcoming launch of a compact crossover space – namely a Figo hatchback-based crossover, will be upgraded from the previous versions and might help rescue the dwindling sales figures for Ford.
