Considering the ever increasing demand for SUVs, adding Tucson will not only help Hyundai to widen the customer choice but also to leverage the success of its stable mates: Creta and the Santa Fe. The Tucson nicely slots into the gap between the smaller Creta and the bigger Santa Fe.

The car has a more rounded look compared to the squarish silhouette of the smaller Creta. The front end is dominated by the large signature Hyundai hexagonal grille flanked by the elongated and sharp looking headlamps. The sides have a decent dose of muscle to exude the SUV feel. The rear looks like a fusion of Elite i20 and the larger Santa-Fe and it looks nice and sporty. The interiors are not flamboyant compared to the car’s exterior. As usual, the quality of the materials used inside are undoubtedly superb and the car packs in a lot of features.

In the international markets, there is an option to select the black plus maroon or the black plus beige combos for the interior. In India, Hyundai most probably will only stick with the black plus beige combo for the interiors. The cars packs in a lot of comfort features like a large 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system, smart-powered tailgate (similar to the one seen on the new Skoda Superb - the boot opens when you wave your foot below it), a segment first automatic parking, autonomous emergency braking, lane keeping assist and blind spot assist system.

Considering the recent surge in demand for petrol cars, Hyundai will be bringing the Tucson in petrol as well as diesel variants to India. Tucson will share the petrol engine with the recently launched Elantra; the 2.0-litre petrol motor will churn out 150 bhp power and a healthy 192 Nm torque. The diesel engine variant will come with a 2.0-litre CRDi power pot, which generates 136 bhp power and turning torque of 373 Nm. Also, considering the popularity of automatic cars, in all probability Hyundai will be bringing auto variants in both diesel and petrol models.

IBB Quick Facts - Hyundai Tucson

IBB Initial Impression

Hyundai Tucson will definitely leverage the following factors for success:

  • The popularity of the Creta, making Tucson a perfect upgrade from the Creta.
  • Tucson slots pretty well between the Creta at the lower end and Santa Fe at the other end of the price spectrum.
  • Except for the Mahindra XUV 500, not much direct competition for the Tucson currently. Definitely, Tucson will be a better-finished product than the XUV 500.
