Skoda Cars in India

The Skoda Rapid was first introduced to the country in the year 2011. Since then, there has been no update to the vehicle and it was much in need of an update or change. Finally, this November 2016, the automaker decided to launch the all-new facelift version – the Skoda Rapid Facelift 2016.

To begin with, the facelift gets a fresh face that has sharper and cleaner lines, additionally; the interiors are revised as well. To add to it, the engine is also brushed up and now gets new specs with new transmission.

For now, Skoda lovers have plenty to look forward to with this model and it’s quite a significant introduction. More than that, it’s like a comprehensive advancement. Apart from this, Skoda sells 3 other models in the country - Octavia, Superb and Yeti.

The new Rapid model is going to be offered in 3 variants – Active, Ambition and Style.  The price for the new facelift model is INR 8.27 lakhs. The petrol version’s cost is between INR 8.27 lakhs to INR 11.36 lakhs. The diesel ranges from INR 9.49 lakhs to INR 12.67 lakhs.

When talking about the exterior, most of the changes are focused on the front of the vehicle. The front grille is now wider and has a chrome outline and joins into the headlights which has grown in size and become more angular and sharp. The lines on the bonnet resemble the older sibling, the Superb. The redesigned bumper has an orderly look and hosts fog lamps which are trapezoidal, LED daytime running lights and black cladding. In essence, the front has a revamped bumper, new grille, new bonnet, and sharper headlamps. Although the front fascia has been changed, the side and rear outlines remain quite similar in the updated 2016 version.

The colours made available are Flash Red, Carbon Steel Candy White, Silk Blue, Cappuccino Beige, and Brilliant Silver.

In a broad sense, the cabin looks quite the usual but has an updated colour scheme, but it definitely sports a wide range of tweaks and has a host of new equipment. A few noteworthy features worth mentioning are cruise control, auto climate control, rain sensing wipers, auto headlamps and touch screen infotainment arrangement which comes with USB, AUX Bluetooth and GPS navigation among others.

Additionally new steering wheel and upholstery add to the appeal. Few more trimmings seen are rear AC vents, steering wheel with length and height adjustment, comfortable and spacious rear seats with arm rests, multi-functional steering wheel, mirrors that are electronically adjustable, footwell illumination in an amber glow and leather armrests in the front  When it comes to safety, this car is equipped with dual airbags in the front and ABS.

Coming to what drives this machine, it’s the new 1.5L TDI which is a little over 5BHP as compared to its predecessor, the new Rapid produces 112BHP and a torque of 250Nm. The other engine is a 1.6L MPI petrol engine which churns out 103BHP and a torque of 153Nm. Both these engines are linked to a 5 speed manual as well as a 6 speed AMT for the petrol and 7 speed automatic DSG units for the diesel.

This 1.5L diesel engine is the same as the EA 189 series which fuelled the VW Group’s WRC team and Endurance team. This engine has been changed recently to suit Indian conditions and it first featured on the Ameo, VW with increased power. While getting both updates and a fresher look, the Rapid competes with the Maruti Suzuki Ciaz, Honda City, and Hyundai Verna among others. The Rapid will be the most affordable car in the portfolio until the next gen comes along.
