Over the past two generations, the Maruti Suzuki Swift has earned a more premium status and has increased its focus on young enthusiasts as its core target group. Once the new generation Swift is unveiled at the 2018 Auto Expo, this will be reflected in its power-train options, besides its design and equipment list. It will come with the same 1.2litre petrol and 1.3litre diesel engines as the current version, but this time, Maruti will also introduce a sportier and more powerful variant, powered by a 1.4litre turbocharged petrol engine. Though the four-cylinder, naturally aspirated 1.2litre petrol engine and 1.3litre diesel engines are expected to remain unchanged, it will boast of improved levels of refinement. Based on the new lightweight Heartect platform of Maruti, both engines will most likely be more powerful than their current avatars, along with certain tweaks. The peak power and torque outputs will ensure that the engines not only run cleaner but also offer better efficiency. Further, the ARAI certified fuel efficiency for the petrol variant will go up from the current 20.40kmpl.
Likewise, the 1.3litre diesel variant that currently offers 75PS and 190Nm, will turn out to be more powerful. The current version’s ARAI certified 25.20kmpl will also go up. The petrol and diesel engines will come mated to the same five-speed manual transmission as the current car. Also, for the first time ever, the Swift will also be equipped with its AGS (Automatic Gear Shift), or AMT, which will be offered with the petrol and diesel engines both. This will surely make it a lot more convenient to drive in traffic, without compromising on the mileage.

However, most industry experts will anyway go with the four-cylinder, ‘Boosterjet’ 1.4litre turbocharged petrol engine that will probably make its foray in end-2018 or the early in 2019. Besides the juicy 140PS and 230Nm of power, the international launch of the new generation Swift Sport last year also took the automobile industry by storm with its light kerb weight of 970kg. This quick hatchback is expected to offer the best in class power to weight ratio. One hardly needs any more reasons to look forward to the launch of this immensely popular car in its newest avatar.
