Hyundai Creta- Total Cost Of Ownership

Hyundai Creta was a success from the word GO. The car ousted the Ford Ecosport to become the Mini-SUV liege lord in India. The car has all the ingredients to lure the car buying public in terms of styling, stance, positioning, reliability and peace of mind associated with the Hyundai brand.

Living with the Car

One thing which is a trend these days, but which Hyundai don’t follow or incredibly masks are the evident cost-cutting techniques which most of the car manufacturers adopts to keep the costs under check. The car unmistakably looks SUVish with the big grill that dominates the front and the tall stance. Hyundai managed to brew out a perfect concoction with the right mix of butch SUV looks still retaining the sleek lines of a car, making it palatable to a wide range of audience.

Hyundai cars are known for their well-finished interiors, and Creta doesn’t disappoint on this front as well. The car has a more car-like interior. The interior fit and finish are good in line with the rest of the cars in the Hyundai stable if not better, but we noticed the presence of some hard plastics hither and thither on the dashboard. The car has a high window line at the rear, which accentuates the car like interior feel. The Creta can accommodate five passengers in reasonable comfort.

The car comes with four engine options:

1.6 Liter Dual VTVT (Petrol) 6 Speed Manual Transmission.

1.4Liter CRDi (Diesel) 6 Speed Manual Transmission.

1.6 Liter CRDi (Diesel) 6 Speed Manual Transmission.

1.6 Liter CRDi (Diesel) 6 Speed Automatic Transmission.

The 1.6 Liter CRDi generates 126 bhp, aiding in some quick acceleration figures for the car. The smaller 1.4 Liter diesel engine (same that seen on the i20) churns out 89 bhp while the 1.6 VTVT petrol generates 122 bhp power. The 1.6 Liter diesel does the 0-100 kmph sprint in flat 10.8 seconds, making it the quickest Mini SUV while the 1.6 petrol takes 13 seconds to reach the 100 kmph mark on the odometer.

Mileage Figures

MODEL MILEAGE (KMPL)
  CITY HIWAY 80% HIWAY & 20% CITY
1.6 Liter Dual VTVT (Petrol) 6 Speed Manual Transmission. 12.4 18 16.9
1.4 Liter CRDi (Diesel) 6 Speed Manual Transmission. 13.5 20.1 18.8
1.6 Liter CRDi (Diesel) 6 Speed Automatic Transmission. 11.3 16.7 15.6
1.6 Liter Dual VTVT (Petrol) 6 Speed Manual Transmission 9.4 14 13.1

The car is softly sprung with the right amount of bump absorption capabilities. The suspension set-up has an air of fragility unlike that on the Renault Duster. The car has good ride quality, which will be appreciated by families. Steering has the adequate feel and inspires confidence.

Verdict

Hyundai Creta ticks all the right boxes what an urban consumer expects on a modern Mini SUV. Coupled with Hyundai’s core strengths of decent resale value, excellent service network and reliability make this car a sensible choice in the Rs 10-15 lakhs segment. The negatives to name a few are the high price, uninspiring rear styling and very limited off-road capability. However, Hyundai has done all the homework to make the Creta the new benchmark in the Mini SUV segment.
