  • It is said that the fuel-saving will be about 7% with the 'Intelli Hybrid' technology
  • Available in all Scorpio Models (Manual transmission only)
  • Other SUVs to also soon adopt this technology

All news off late seems to be an off-set of the diesel vehicle ban in Delhi and its rippling effects.

Mahindra Scorpio Intelli Hybrid

Mahindra one of the top manufacturers with quite a few diesel cars in their portfolio, were thrown off their game for a short period of time. But it didn’t take a long time for the home-grown company to bounce back on their feet and take charge. Barely after the NGT’s notice, Mahindra launched a couple of SUVs with a 1.99L engine. And now, for one of their most popular and universally loved vehicle – the Scorpio gets a new ‘Intelli-Hybrid’ technology.

What's it all about?

This newly introduced technology – ‘Intelli-Hybrid’ is said to reduce fuel consumption of a vehicle by up to 7%. This takes place because the technology aids the engine by providing electric power at the time of acceleration. Additionally, the vehicle is said to turn off by itself when the car is not in motion for instance at a traffic light. Not only this, the battery also gets recharged with the energy produced by the engine which in other situations tends to go waste.

The Scorpio is a car that had many firsts to its credit– the first Indian SUV to adopt voice messaging, a CRDe engine with a 6-speed automatic transmission variant and now this first of its kind technology! Presently, this technology has been devised to be provided on all variants of the Scorpio – S4, S4+, S4+ 4wd, S6+, S8, S10-2WD and S10-4WD (all manual transmissions)

The Scorpio with this technology is said to be priced at INR 9.74 – INR 14 lakhs.

The President and Chief Executive (Automotive), Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd, Mr. Pravin Shah said, “As an organisation that places keen emphasis on sustainability and eco-friendly practices, across every process and product, we are proud to introduce mild hybrid technology on the Scorpio. By reducing fuel consumption, Intelli-Hybrid helps Scorpio owners contribute towards a cleaner and greener tomorrow."

The push from the Government and NGT will now help India see a rise in hybrid vehicles and a slow decline of diesel vehicles and in lieu of this, Mahindra is also planning to introduce this technology in other models in their product line-up eventually. Other manufacturers like Maruti and Toyota have entered this segment and offer vehicles like the Toyota Camry (Hybrid) and Maruti Suzuki Ciaz (smart Hybrid vehicle system).

Let's have look at some features that this car is going to offer, apart from the Hybrid technology

Making it a complete comfort package features like engine immobilizer, low fuel warning, central locking, steering adjustment, child safety lock etc. are provided. Additionally, some safety features like front dual airbags, crash protection, ABS, crumple zone, side intrusion beams and a folding steering column are present.

A Look into the Hood

Available with a 2.2L diesel engine and powered by a 2179cc engine and a 1997cc engine in Delhi, this 4-cylinder engine with Variable Geometry Turbocharger with Intercooler, and Common Rail Direct Injection Technology, produces a power of 120BHP @ 4000rpm (for both the engines) and a torque of 280Nm@1800-2800rpm (again for engines).
