The 2018 Maruti Suzuki Swift is due to be launched at the Auto Expo 2018 which will start on the 7th of February. The Swift has always been one of the most popular hatchbacks in the country and launched way back on the 25th of March, 2005 in its first generation avatar. This proved to be one of the most exciting cars from Maruti Suzuki in spite of all its chequered history back then. The car was launched only a few months after it officially launched in Japan. The Swift was a landmark launch for Maruti Suzuki, a stylish and contemporary hatchback with the latest features and it was highly different from all other cars on Indian roads in terms of aesthetics. The Swift drove excellently and offered amazing experiences to buyers who swelled in numbers, making this a super hit launch for India’s largest carmaker.
The original car came with a 1.3 litre petrol engine that made 87 BHP and back then, it was regarded as something of a hot hatch by Indian standards. Car lovers were irresistibly hooked to the Swift. The ride quality was good, so was the design and fuel economy, in keeping with Maruti’s signature USP, was also top-notch. The Maruti Swift lived up to its name in entering the list of best-selling cars in the country, a position that it has successfully held onto over the years.
By the month of January in 2007, the 100, 000th unit of the Swift had already been sold in the Indian market and this was the year which saw the launch of the diesel version of the hatchback. This engine was the 1.3 litre MultiJet mill sourced from Fiat. This broadened the Swift’s appeal to Indian buyers and raised sales volumes to such an extent that Maruti could not get orders completed on time. The 200, 000th Swift unit was sold in March, 2008 followed by the 300, 000th unit in February, 2009. The 500, 000th Swift unit was sold in January, 2010.

2010 is another watershed year for the Swift since the upgraded model was now launched in the country. This model catered to BS-IV regulations and the petrol engine was changed to the K12M 1.2 litre engine from Suzuki. There was revised gearing and the suspension setup was also tweaked to ensure superior ride quality. The Swift continued its trail blazing form in terms of sales volumes. In August, 2011, the second generation Swift was launched. The brand got a major boost with this model which received a few tweaks and got improved handling and driving experiences. Sales volumes continued skyrocketing with the 1 millionth unit of the Swift being delivered in September, 2013.

The Swift was then upgraded in the year 2014 with several new features including keyless go, telephone functions and Bluetooth. Till April 2015, sales volumes touched a whopping 1.3 million units for the Swift in the country. It kept going strong till last year before sales started tapering off a little and many buyers preferring to wait for the 2018 Swift.
The Swift has sold approximately 17.8 lakh units in less than 13 years from its market launch in May, 2005. The third generation model has the same 1.3 litre diesel and 1.2 litre K-Series petrol engines that are being used for the 2018 version. There is a 5-speed manual transmission unit for the third generation Swift but the latest version will get a 5-speed AGS option as well. In fact, the year 2016 saw the Swift touching global sales volumes of a whopping 5 million units, out of which Maruti contributed a stellar 54% as per reports.
Indeed, the Swift has had a chequered journey in the Indian market. All the models introduced have been hugely popular and have dominated the market at varying points of time. With the 2018 model looking sleeker, sharper and more feature packed than before, the Swift brand should continue its sales juggernaut in 2018 and in the years to come!
