AMG cars from Mercedes Benz don’t require an introduction among automobile enthusiasts. The AMG CLA 45 is the most affordable car with an AMG badge you can currently buy in India. What makes this car different from the normal CLA is the engine that lurks under the hood. Let us rev it out!
Mercedes call it a four door coupe. Based on the A-Class this car has got four doors and a swerved roof line resembling a coupe.
The front gets a large three pointed star and LED high performance headlamps. Overall the front looks sharper and meaner than the previous model. The AMG A wing on the front apron gets front splitter inserts finished in high gloss black and matt titanium grey bits. Move to the sides and the 18-inch AMG ten-spoke alloy wheels finished in titanium grey or black grabs your attention. You can also opt for a larger 19-inch AMG cross spoke alloy wheels.
The boot lid gets a neatly integrated AMG spoiler. The rear bumper houses diffusers with four vertical fins. Mercedes Benz is also offering an optional Aerodynamic package for the AMG CLA. This one gets additional larger front splitter and black AMG rear spoiler lip along with spoiler lips over the simulated air outlets at the rear. The CLA AMG looks like a smaller variant of the CLS.
The performance and sporty nature of the car is carried inside as well. The interiors are finished in black with contrast red elements. The red-ringed HVAC vents and the tablet-like screen at the center are the most noticeable elements on the dashboard.
The 8.0 inch COMAND infotainment system is controlled by a small rotary knob on the center console. The interior is designed around the driver. The interior has an air of sporty elegance. The AMG flat bottom steering wheel and gear shifter are simply luscious. The seats are pretty comfy and are draped in Alacantara leather.
Engine and Performance
Here comes the major highlight of the car. The AMG CLA 45 is powered by a 2.0 liter four cylinder twin-scroll turbocharger gasoline engine tuned by the AMG division that pumps out a jaw-dropping 381 hp max power and peak torque of 475 Nm torque.
The power is efficiently transmitted by a 4Matic automatic gearbox to all the four wheels. It takes some time for the turbo to build up the boost, but once done the car pushes the occupants back into their seats. You extract maximum pleasure from the engine in the 2000-4000 rpm rev range. The car breaches the 100 kmph mark is just 4.1 seconds.
Ride and Handling
It’s a primarily front wheel drive car with power sent to the rear wheels when necessary by the 4 Matic system. The car offers great grip and control over even tight and high demanding corners and encourages the driver to carry lot of speed into the corners. Being a sports car, the ride is pretty hard and undulations on the road are felt right up to the steering wheel. Car offers great straight line stability and gobbles miles with great ease.
