The brand new 2017 BMW 5 Series has been launched in the Indian market by cricket icon Sachin Tendulkar (the brand ambassador for BMW cars in the country) and Vikram Pawah, the President, BMW Group India in Mumbai. BMW has claimed that the new 5 Series possesses all the features and attributes required to dominate its segment where it competes with rivals such as the new entrant Lexus ES, Mercedes-Benz E-Class, Volvo S90, Jaguar XF and the Audi A6.
The new 5 Series is a 7th generation model and was globally shown last October. The front fascia clearly harks back to the larger 7 Series from BMW’s stable. There are LED headlamps along with optional adaptive LED lights in tandem with the anti-dazzle beam technology, which increases your viewing range by up to almost ½ a kilometre. There are adaptive dampers present along with a new iDrive system. There is also a bigger heads-up display unit in the new 5 Series as compared to the outgoing model. There is also four-zone climate control along electric seats that have neat massage functions.
The new 5 Series is lighter by 70 kgs as compared to the outgoing model while headroom and shoulder room have increased as well. There is higher boot space of 400 litres while there are M Sport, Luxuryline and Sportline design packages available for buyers. Rear passengers also get two 10-inch touch screens to take care of their infotainment requirements. The entry level 520d option comes with a 2.0 litre turbocharged diesel engine that churns out 190 PS and 400 Nm. There is also the turbocharged petrol engine for the 530i, which makes 252 PS and 350 Nm. The range-topping 530d M Sport comes with the diesel 3.0 litre mill that dishes out 265 PS and a whopping 620 Nm of peak torque. An 8-speed automatic transmission setup will be standard for all variants of the new 5 Series.
BMW has already sold in excess of 66, 000 cars till date in India and out of this, the 5 Series has contributed a healthy 30% with sales volumes for the sedan crossing 19, 000 units till date.
