Ford, an American multinational automaker, is one of the leading automobile companies in India which comes up with upgraded car model every year. They launched the Dragon family of the petrol engine in the Ford EcoSport. This was a 1.5 litre petrol engine and was said to an upper hand on the engines in the market in a lot of respects such as better technology, lower cost and more. The success of the 1.5 litre Dragon paved way for the lower capacity 1.2 litre engine that is set to be launched in the Figo hatchback and Aspire compact sedan models in 2018.
The 1.2 Dragon will be quite similar to the 1.5 litre unit with respect to all-aluminium, three-cylinder, twin-cam one and shares the same block. It is quite obvious that the capacity of the engine will be lower than that of the 1.5 litre unit of the Dragon series of engine with a cubic capacity of 1194 cc. This has been achieved using smaller pistons. The engine can churn out a power of 95 BHP and a maximum torque of 115 Nm.

The new motor is expected to be mated with a new 5 speed manual gearbox which is lighter, more accurate and needs less effort to operate. An AMT derivative of the same is expected to follow. The 1.2 litre unit will stop short of the 1.5 litre in a few respects such as the lack of a balancer shaft that helps smoothen out the natural vibrations of a three-cylinder engine.
It is speculated that the cars fitted with the 1.2 litre unit will be called as compact utility vehicles by Ford with features such as raised suspension, wider stance, larger wheels and additional body cladding making its way into the car models.
