Total: 2 .

The Union Cabinet chaired by the Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi passed the new motor vehicle (amendment) bill 2016. The bill proposes critical amendments to improve the safety and prevent violations by charging higher penalties than before. Every year 5 lakh road accidents are reported in the country in which 1.5 lakh people lose their lives. One serious road accident occurs every minute in India and 16 die on Indian roads every hour. 377 people die every day, equivalent to a jumbo jet crashing every day! The new motor vehicle bill aims to reduce the accidents and fatalities by 50% in five years.

Proposed Amendments in Various Penalties under Motor Vehicle Amendment Bill – 2016

The increased fine for driving under the influence of alcohol is now set at Rs.10,000 from the earlier Rs.2,000. The fine for driving without wearing seatbelts is increased 10 folds from Rs.100 to Rs.1000. Also, riding two-wheelers without a helmet will get you a fine of Rs.1000 and suspension of license for three months. The fine for hit and run cases will see a steep rise from Rs.25,000 to Rs.2,00,000. The bill also has provision for payment of compensation up to Rs.10 lakh in road accidents fatalities.

The bill proposes that the respective State Governments can specify a multiplier, not less than one and not greater than ten, to be applied to each penalty under this Act and such modified fine.
