The new mid-size sedan from Toyota, the Yaris, had been spotted during the test runs in India. There would be rivals like the Hyundai Verna, and the Maruti Ciaz that would be displayed at the upcoming Auto Expo and they would be slotted above the Etios sedan in the lineup from the Japanese brand. The car would be launched in the second half of 2018. The automaker, however, had already started teasing the upcoming model before the India debut.
The Yaris from Toyota is sold as the Vios in certain Asian markets. It would come to India with specifications that would be similar to the car sold in Singapore, that have a length of about 4.425 m. The cars have a 3-box model that would feature a few design-based features. These designs are reminiscent of the larger Corolla. This means that the styling would not be radical and would be more polarising.
The car has a 107 hp, 1.5-litre petrol engine under the hood and could be seen in the production models. The diesel engine would be unlikely as Toyota does not yet have a small capacity diesel engine that would meet the upcoming BS-VI norms. There is, however, a potential for the petrol-hybrid powertrain that would be introduced at a later stage. There would be two options for the transmission. One of them would be a 5-speed manual or a 7-speed automatic.
The cabin of the car would be very simple, functional and the design would be quite ergonomic. The spy image shows that there would be a large infotainment screen in the central console. The Japanese brand also claims that the car would have one of the best-in-class cabin widths according to the market. Toyota should be pricing the Yaris competitively in the Indian market and could be priced anywhere around Rs. 8.5 to 11 lakh.
