Mahindra has launched its new manufacturing unit at Auburn, Michigan, United States. This is the first OEM from India to commence operations in Southeast Michigan over the last two and a half decades. MANA (Mahindra Automotive North America) was founded in the year 2013 with focus on engineering, automotive design and its vehicle development centre.

The new facility is in sync with the expansion plans of the Mahindra Group and is a major part of the $230 million invested in Southeast Michigan which covers the Pontiac logistics and warehousing facility and the Troy based prototype operations. Mahindra has scaled up to 400,000 sq. ft. in terms of its manufacturing footprint, covering three facilities in Detroit area. The Mahindra North American Technical Centre was established in Troy, Michigan, four years earlier.
MANA has already increased its workforce numbers to 250 and is targeting the creation of 400 jobs by the year 2020. This will require added investments to the tune of $600 million. The new Detroit unit will produce an off-road cum highway vehicle which MANA will create and Mahindra & Mahindra has claimed that this will be a totally unique vehicle for the United States market.

Mahindra & Mahindra had previously planned to foray into the United States market with its pick-up based on the Scorpio and dealerships were also appointed. However, legal issues with the dealers scuttled these plans around 5 years earlier.
According to the Chairman at Mahindra Group, Anand Mahindra, this is a major milestone for the company in Detroit and all its employees. The new inauguration signals the company’s growing presence in the Metro Detroit zone and North America market in general. The Mahindra brand will be grown steadily in Michigan and North America according to him. Mahindra was also listed as one of the 5 companies to manufacture delivery truck prototypes for evaluation and testing purposes by the USPS (United States Postal Service).
