Sales of SUVs have increased hugely over the last few years as more customers switch to utility vehicles instead of sedans and other compact cars. As per the latest reports, sales volumes have increased by a handsome 20% in case of SUVs in India last year. SIAM data had shown that 4.97 lakh utility vehicles were sold between January and November in 2016. For the period between January and November in 2017, SUV sales have touched 5.97 lakh units. The increase of 20% or around 1 lakh units is a clear indicator of the customer demand for SUVs in India.

27% of overall market share in the passenger vehicle category was taken up by utility vehicles in 2017 which is a handsome number as well. There were several new launches including the S-Cross from Maruti Suzuki, the Tata Nexon, Ford EcoSport facelift, flagship Renault Captur, Jeep Compass, Skoda Kodiaq, Tata Hexa, Volkswagen Tiguan and the Isuzu MU-X among others.
The tally for 2018 looks even more promising if you consider planned launches like the facelifted Mahindra XUV500, S201 compact SUV and new MPV to compete with the Toyota Fortuner along with the new BMW X3, Audi Q5, Honda CR-V, Mitsubishi Outlander, Porsche Cayenne, Range Rover Velar, Range Rover and Range Rover Sport, Lexus NX and Volvo XC40. There will also be the eagerly awaited Lamborghini Urus and Toyota Land Cruiser Prado facelift among others.
