The Auto Expo 2016 saw a debut of more than 80 cars and two-wheelers. Some of the vehicles seen at the Auto Expo are still in concept and pre-production stage and would take a couple years to launch even, but the bulk of them are newer models, facelifts and revamped versions and also first-timers setting foot into the country. And all these cars will make its debut launch in the coming months or in the course of the year. Many products were featured in order to give a feel, to showcase what was in the line-up, to give a peek into the future and to prep auto enthusiasts’ what they were going to get and await for in the foreseeable future.
Out of the 80 vehicles presented, some were set to make their mark this March 2016, and the same have been listed below:
Maruti Vitara Brezza
Developed solely in-house by MSIL (Maruti Suzuki India Limited) it is one of the most significant models in Maruti’s history. The launch of this vehicle will make it the first budget-friendly, family-oriented and compact size SUV launched by the largest auto manufacturer in the country. The price range of this is said to be in the range of INR 6.99 lakh to 9.68 lakh. Maruti is releasing 6 trim levels out of which four are primary and two optional - LDI, LDI (O), VDI, VDI (O), ZDI, and ZDI+.
The design has taken inspiration from its sibling – the new generation Suzuki Vitara and it’s based on the Suzuki Global C platform. The Brezza is projected to be the game-changing model for Maruti in the SUV segment; the competitive pricing is only going to make the car stand out even more. The SUV will initially BE available in a diesel engine format that sports a 1.3L diesel engine which produces 90bhp and a torque of 200Nm. One of the most awaited launches, the Brezza will compete with the Ford Ecosport and the Mahindra TUV300.
Honda Amaze Facelift
With the need to be in tune with competition, Honda Cars India has come out with the faceliftED version of the Honda Amaze which is priced at INR 5.29 lakhs. Wide arrays of features have been changed including the front and rear panels of the exterior body and the colour variants. To give a more premium feel, the cabin too has undergone some changes. All in all, a lot of changes have been made to the interior and the exterior of the vehicle but under the bonnet, things seem to be the same. The petrol engine is powered by the same 1.2L i-VTEC engine that produces 87bhp and a maximum torque of 109Nm and the diesel engine comes with a 1.5L i-DTEC engine which produces 99bhp of power and a maximum torque of 200Nm. Popularly known for its fuel efficiency, the petrol Amaze gives about 17.8 km/l (manual transmission) and 18.1 km/l (CVT) and the diesel offers a high of 25.8 km/l.
Another prominent feature that Honda has added to this vehicle is the availability option of dual airbags starting from the base variant – this addition will be featured in models released in the FY2016-17. When the Amaze first launched in 2013, it turned the tables for Honda and brought in nothing but fortune. It was the first diesel model by the Japanese motor company and the youngest too. With the facelift model, Honda Amaze gets to stay in the top and compete with highly efficient models. Honda has increased prices for this facelift version to keep it in-line with the policies of the Union budget.
Mercedes Maybach S600 Guard
One of the first among the 12 planned cars to be launched this year by Mercedes, the S600 guard is the second armoured car to join the India line-up of Mercedes-Benz. This car is going to be priced at INR 10.5 crores which makes it one of the most expensive cars to set foot and to be retailed in India.
The speciality of the car lies in the armoured body which comes with VR10 protection. This guards the car from bullets, grenades, explosives, blasts, fires and sniper firing. In the interior, the cabin is designed in such a way that the seats can be re-positioned which lets the passenger sit further back. The bottommost portion of the car comes with armour which defends the vehicle from explosive devices that can sometimes even go off from under the vehicle. The windows of the car are coated with polycarbonate and the cabin is designed for protection from gas attacks even. This is made possible by air channels that release fresh air in the event of an attack.
All this armour and protection equipment has made this quite a heavy vehicle and to support this weight, the engine needs to be equally powerful. Hence, the car comes with a 6.0L twin turbo V12 engine that produces 523bhp and a torque of 830Nm. A speed of 100kmph can be achieved in a matter of 7.9 seconds in this car.
Renault Duster Facelift
The exceedingly successful car for the French manufacturer, the Renault Duster was named the NDTV car of the year 2013. Ruling the streets for innumerable quarters, the stronghold was broken when the Hyundai Creta was released in 2015. Having already sold 150,000 units within the country, it’s looking to gain its position back with the introduction of the facelift model.
Renault maintains the quirky and unique silhouette and also mechanically, there are no changes seen. A lot of work has been done on the outside like a new front grille and cutting edge headlamps. A new signature element has been added which is the taillight that lights up like an S or lightning bolt when lit up. Renault calls this the waterfall design. On the inside, the change lies in the crimson black interior theme for the Automatic version and a Cedarwood black interior theme with dual tone dashboard for the other variants. Another significant change is the six-speed AMT (Automated Transmission). The 1.5L diesel engine remains the same.
This new re-modelled Duster is available at a price of INR 8.46 lakhs and bookings were open from March 3rd 2016 across all dealerships in the country.
A car is a necessary and a companionable piece of metal and equipment in our lives these days. With this in mind, auto manufacturers are releasing cars ever so often to keep the auto enthusiast satisfied with facelift versions and new launches, there is always something in store for every individual in the four-wheel drive market.
