Volkswagen Passat Comprehensive Review

The Volkswagen Passat provides a decent value among the competitive mid-size class. It also impresses its shoppers and buyers with its quiet upscale cabin, smooth performance, spacious seating, and also powerful optional V6 engine. But, a very few list of its standard features along with small infotainment screen prevents it from standing out amongst the herd.

Exterior:

The VW Passat took after its instantaneous in-line predecessor with regards an outward appeal. The Volkswagen Passat gets LED headlamps and tail lamps along with new bumpers and a distinctive grille in tandem with a slightly redesigned trunk and front bumper. The rear diffuser and side skirts are also modified accordingly. The Passat makes use of 19 inch aluminum anthracite Salvador alloy wheels along with a domed and chiseled hood.

Interior:

The new Volkswagen Passat comes with a brand new instrument panel and steering wheel alike. The use of quality materials inside the cabin is a good touch. There are heated rear seats along with the MIB II touch screen infotainment unit complete with MirrorLink, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, Bluetooth, USB and other features. There is a panoramic sunroof along with three-zone automatic climate control and features like Park Assist. There is a head-up display and a 12.3 inch digital instrument cluster. The new Passat has a longer wheelbase than the earlier model, ensuring higher legroom at the rear. It has a 2,791 mm wheelbase and is also wider than the earlier model.

Performance:

The Indian version of the Passat now gets a single diesel 2.0 litre engine. The engine can churn out 177 PS and 350 Nm. The engine offers ample power and is a treat to drive, particularly when it comes to cruising on the highway. The engine is paired to a 6-speed DSG automatic transmission unit. There are Comfortline and Highline variants on offer. Overall performance is smooth as expected with decent power delivery and a responsive gearbox.

Ride and handling:

Though the Passat is calm most of the time, it can also tackle spirited driving. The steering is typically precise and a bit sharper too. The Volkswagen Passat feels well-rounded and safe around corners and can take Indian roads pretty well courtesy its excellent suspension setup and capable tyres.

Reliability:

With respect to predicted reliability, the Passat 2017 receives 4 out of 5 stars which speaks volumes about its overall quality, performance and its ability to perform well in the city and also on the highway.

Safety features:

The 2017 Passat comes with 9 airbags as a standard feature in addition to ABS and EBD. Other safety features include a 360-degree reverse camera and sensors along with park assist, forward collission warning, adaptive cruise control, driver assistance system, lane departure warning, blind spot monitoring, autonomous emergency braking system and rear traffic assist.
