The car looks unmistakably Volvos of yore with the new signature vertical-slat grille and the beautiful Thor’s hammer sideways T-LED daytime lights.
The car is based on Volvo’s Scalable Product Architecture (SPA) platform that underpins the well-received 90 series. The front has ‘just-sufficient’ overhang, thanks to the transversely mounted engine. The side profile is neat with not much cuts and creases, but with enough muscle for that unmistakable SUV stance. The car gets neat looking 19-inch alloy wheels. The rear has sharply styled LED rear lamps and the boot design resembles the larger XC90. Overall the design is a blend of aggression, elegance, and sportiness.
The dashboard design, TFT instrument cluster, vertically mounted infotainment screen and the blade-like aircon vents have a lot of similarities with the XC90 and it is a good initial impression. The interior is based on a full-black theme with brushed silver and un-lacquered wood elements. The seats are finished in brown Nappa leather. The fit and finish of the interiors immediately catch your attention.
The cabin is unmistakably luxurious with Volvo throwing in all possible features that can be packed in this segment, the XC60, in fact, shares the equipment list with the bigger XC90. The front seats are huge with very good support in all directions. The seats get cooling/heating functions along with segment first massaging feature. The vertically mounted 9.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system is the center of attraction on the dashboard and it is tweaked to offer the best user experience and comes with Volvo’s Sensus Navigation. Also, the driver gets a 12.3 inch TFT instrument console and heads-up display. The car gets a panoramic sunroof, Bowers and Wilkins sound system and a four-zone climate control to name a few. The rear seat is also very comfortable with more than sufficient legroom and is well designed and cushioned. The car gets a decent 505-liter boot, which is sufficient for the airport runs and the weekend getaways.
Engine and Performance
The car for the moment comes to India in only one trim, the D5 form. This means it gets Volvo’s modular 2.0-liter twin-turbo diesel engine that dispenses peak power of 235hp and maximum torque of 480Nm. This engine is mated to an 8-speed automatic gearbox that transmits power to all the four wheels. This car is more of a ‘civilized beast’ rather than an aggressive performer. The engine is smooth and has a deep and sound power delivery. There is ample torque spread across the entire revv range and you will never run out of power in the XC60. The car is ultra-refined and engine don’t transmit any sound or harshness even at high rpms into the cabin. The gearbox is pretty quick and complements the engine well. You can also play around with the paddle shifters if you wish to do so.
The car gets the following drive modes to suit the driving conditions:
Handling and Comfort
XC60 gets an auto-adjusting suspension at the front as well as the rear. The suspension adjusts the height and firmness depending on the drive modes. The ride comfort is just impeccable on the XC60. The suspension is set up more for a comfortable ride rather than outright handling. You can very well carry decent speeds into the corners, but always keep in mind it is not a low slung race car. The car holds well in high-speed straight line. The steering is light but offers not much feedback.
Like any other Volvo, the XC60 offers class-leading safety features. The car gets 8 airbags all around. The other safety features include:
- Hill start assist
- Front seat whiplash protection
- Lane keeping assist
- Pilot assist
- ISOFIX mounts for the rear seats
- Blind spot information system
- 360-degree camera
- Adaptive cruise control
