The very popular Hyundai has launched the second generation model for Tucson. This particular model is equipped with a total of five variants and also offered two engine and two transmission options. Most importantly, there is no four-wheel drive variant on offer yet. The SUV will fill the slot left between the Creta and the Santa Fe in Hyundai India's lineup.

Quick Facts –

  • The car is handy enough and is comfortable to use
  • It has a competitive style with fluidic structure design
  • Attractive design – both interior and exterior with powerful engine
  • The SUV has eight-inch touchscreen infotainment system along with other niceties on offer

The very front grille is flanked by swept back headlamps that also have two projector units apart from the reflector unit for high-beam. The LED day-time running lamps are integrated on the fog-lamp housing on the front bumper which also gets a faux skid plate. The side profile is also similar to that of the Santa Fe with the shoulder line climbing up towards the tailgate. The black cladding around the perimeter of the car gives it a rugged look. It also gets the i20 inspired tail lamps that stand out on the creased tailgate. This is definitely one of the best-looking cars in its class.

The new fluidic design embraced by Hyundai for even Electra and Sonata is clearly a cut above the rest. Right from the front headlamps to the sides and to the rear lamps is a wonderful symphony of design excellence. The front bumper, side skirt and rear bumper all get matte silver scuff plates which when combined with a darker colour like the dark grey or wine red looks great. The silver we have here masks it just a little.

The interiors are not as dramatic as the exterior but premium nonetheless. The Tucson has got spacious cabin with 5 seats. The seats will get leather upholstery as an option. The top variant gets an electrically adjustable driver seat while the rear seats can be reclined and also split 60-40 and folded up as well. Two-zone automatic climate control, cruise control automatic headlamps as well as push-button start are standard along with electrically foldable wing mirrors.

The dashboard features the very effective touchscreen display at the centre that also has steering-mounted audio controls. For safety, dual front airbags with ABS and EBD are standard across the range with the top-spec car getting six airbags. Similar to the front, the rear is also equipped with a few very distinct detail elements, like the twin trapezoidal exhaust tips. The tail lamp too follows the same lighting pattern that you get in the headlamp with the slim long LED elements and the LED brake lights.

The car is absolutely comfortable to ride. Superb ride quality is expected, be it while driving in the city or on the highway. Spacious interiors with more than ample legroom even when the front seats are fully backed to the hilt make the car interiors as well as performance class apart. The safety features like ABS makes one feel safe while on a drive. The Hyundai Tucson will be offered in both petrol and diesel variants in India. The strength is that oil-burner of the Tucson is powered by a 2.0-litre four-cylinder diesel mill which makes it even more easy to handle. Both the guises might come mated to a six-speed AT gearbox. The rear passengers get AC vents in the centre and the top of the line package gets leather seats. Instead of providing a simple lap seatbelt for the middle passenger, this model is equipped with a retractable roof mounted seatbelt. A retractable cover is equipped to the large boot and it is also offered with a full sized spare wheel instead of a space saver.

Engine and Performance

The Tucson is now compared to Hyundai Creta and Hyundai Santa-Fe SUVs. It ideally competes with Honda CR-V and Skoda Yeti both being five-seater SUVs. But with its price tag it also competes with the Innova Crysta and D-segment sedans like Skoda Octavia, Toyota Corolla Altis and Chevrolet Cruze. The Hyundai Tucson comes with both petrol and diesel engines. The performance of the engine stands out for its smoothness. The 153bhp, 192Nm 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol also comes with similar six-speed manual and automatic options. The Tucson only gets the front-wheel drive setup and expects the torque-on demand all-wheel drive Tucson to come in soon. The gearbox too shifts smoothly and has no shift shock. A set of paddle shifters on the steering wheel would have been ideal. You could also choose to have a 6-speed manual with the diesel engine, but honestly, in this segment, automatic is the way to go.

Handling and Ride Comfort

On the inside, the interior design is quite familiar with its conventional layout like other Hyundai cars. Most importantly, it is provided with so many comfort and connectivity features which include automatic parking, an eight-inch touchscreen display, and blind spot assist system, autonomous emergency braking, drive mode selector, lane keeping assist etc. Most of these features are expected to be offered in the India-spec model. The five-seater SUV will offer more space in the cabin in comparison to the Creta. The comfort level of the car is on higher range. The Tucson is one of the first ‘mass market’ cars that offer an electronic handbrake instead of a conventional one. What this means is that the centre console gets a lot more storage area and two cup holders.

The automatic variant is equipped with a drive mode button as well as hill hold assist buttons right beside the electronic handbrake. The Tucson also gets an electronic tailgate, which can be opened and closed though a button on the dashboard which makes it very handy to use. Hyundai has done on the NVH levels so brilliantly and this is the most impressive aspect. One can barely hear the diesel engine up to about 2700 rpm and even post that, the engine noise is not intrusive. Hyundai has mended the cabin noise in general while the front fenders have got equipped with considerable foam padding in order to reduce infiltration of vibrations. It can travel long distances that makes it more handy and comfortable to use.
