An electric vehicle is being planned by Honda Cars India Limited as per reports. The car that will be launched may use an upgraded version of the platform used by the Honda Brio hatchback and this will be compatible with electric powertrains as per reports. The next generation Brio is also being developed by the company and its Senior Vice President, Marketing & Sales, Jnaneswar Sen, has already confirmed the chalking out an EV strategy for India.
The board meeting of the company took place recently and there was talk of setting up a plant for producing lithium-ion batteries like Suzuki is doing. This was discussed along with the blueprint for launching different EVs in India and the types that may be feasible here. The parent organization is also involved in choosing the best options for India as per sources.
Honda is also looking at launching the Urban EV for Europe and Japan and it may be launched by 2019 and 2020 respectively in these markets. However, there will be a unique and completely different model for the Indian market if reports are to be believed. The company may announce its decision anytime soon with regard to upcoming electric vehicles and a new plant for manufacturing batteries.
