Conceived under the Indian’s government’s National Automotive Testing and R&D Infrastructure Project (NATRiP), The International Centre for Automotive Technology (ICAT) saw the inauguration of its Centre II, which boasts world-class advanced automotive testing facilities.
Currently, ICAT undertakes major activities for the automobile industry such as homologation and certification according to Indian regulations, testing as per various Indian as well as global regulations, along with development and automotive R&D projects. First of the new world-class centres established under NATRiP, ICAT sprawls over 8 acres at Centre I and over 46.6 acres at Centre II. The capital investment behind it amounts to over Rs. 1,100 crore.
The following are some of the new facilities being inaugurated at ICAT’s Centre II-
- Noise Vibration and Harshness (NVH) Lab: with an investment of around Rs. 153 crore, this lab is equipped with facilities such as Semi-Anechoic Rooms with dynamometer capabilities for PVs and HCVs, modal analysis room, coupled acoustic rooms and listening room. The Passenger Car Semi-Anechoic Chamber is well-equipped to simulate external Pass by Noise test for development of vehicles to meet present and future regulatory requirements.
- Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) Lab: This required an investment of around Rs. 70 crore, with the purpose of certification and R&D in the field of Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC), the ability of a vehicle or electrical/electronic component to function in a satisfactory manner in its electromagnetic environment.
- Passive Safety Lab (PSL): The Rs. 68 crore facility provides certification and R&D in the field of passive safety. It is equipped to perform crash tests, pedestrian protection tests and sled tests according to various Indian, international and NCAP regulations.
- Tyre Test Lab (TTL): The purpose of this lab is to provide services related to Type Approval and Conformity of Production of Tyres. ICAT has developed new capabilities for this lab, and these also encompass the installation of Dual Station Endurance Test Rig and Tyre Rolling Resistance Test Rig.
