Administered by the government, the Central Electro Chemical Research Institute (CECRI) and the RAASI Solar Power Pvt Ltd have contracted an agreement on the first transference of technology for lithium-ion batteries in the country. As posited by the Science and Technology Ministry, this particular memorandum of agreement is the very first of its kind for our country. India obtains lithium-ion batteries from numerous countries such as Japan, China, South Korea among several others. As one of the biggest importers of lithium-ion batteries, India imported approximately $150 million worth of these batteries in the year 2017. The indigenous equipment required for lithium-ion cells has been industrialized by a few of the scientists at the Council for Scientific Industrial Research (CSIR)'s CECRI in Karaikudi, in the state of Tamil Nadu, in collaboration with CSIR-Indian Institute of Chemical Technology, Hyderabad, CSIR-Central Glass and Ceramic Research Institute, Kolkata as well as CSIR-National Physical Laboratory.
According to Science and Technology Minister, Harsh Vardhan, this development is a substantiation of the competences of CSIR and its laboratories to congregate technology in the significant areas in order to support the industry, in addition to other sectors. He has also mentioned that this development is going to give remarkable boost to two flagship programmes, one of them being generating 175 giga watts (GW) by the year 2022, of which 100 giga watts will be solar and the latter, the National Electric Mobility Mission which is to entirely substitute to electric vehicles by the year 2030.
The Raasi Group, under MoU, is going to establish a production facility in Krishnagiri district in Tamil Nadu, which is situated nearby Bengaluru. The Raasi Group Chairman, C. Narsimhan is of the opinion that they want to limit the cost of cell production lower than Rs 15,000 per KW in order to substitute lead acid battery. Among the various uses of lithium-ion batteries are those in the energy storage systems. Without having the aid of any physical wires, these batteries can power any electrical application.
