As per the latest reports, the brand new SUV planned by MG Motor India in 2019 may use the 2.0 litre diesel mill from the Jeep Compass which makes 171 BHP and 350 Nm. This engine is presently mated to a 6-speed manual transmission system in the Indian market. The engine also offers 17.1 kmpl in terms of fuel economy which is quite impressive. MG Motor is also expected to build a new petrol engine for its new SUV which could be sourced from its extensive global lineup.
The owner of the iconic British brand is Chinese conglomerate SAIC which is the 7th largest carmaker globally with sales volumes touching almost 7 million units last year. MG Motor may source the diesel engine from the popular Jeep Compass since SAIC already has tie-ups with FCA, General Motors and Volkswagen in China.
MG Motor only has petrol engines for its products worldwide but it may make an exception for the Indian market by introducing a diesel engine option for its new SUV as per the President & Managing Director at MG Motor India, Rajeev Chaba. This new SUV will be a larger offering like the Hyundai Creta and Renault Captur as per reports. General Motors has previously sourced the 1.3 litre MultiJet diesel engine from FCA for its hatchbacks and sedans in India. This is a trend that may be followed now by MG Motor India according to reports.
