Nissan X-Trail Hybrid - Preview

Nissan is bringing the latest Nissan X-Trail to India. The new model doesn’t have any resemblance in appearance as well as mechanicals from the old model. And more importantly, the new X-Trail is powered by a petrol-electric hybrid motor. The car will be competing for its share against the likes of Hyundai Santa-Fe and Honda CRV. The car is developed on the Renault-Nissan’s latest CMF (Common Module Family) platform, used in the Nissan Qashqai and Renault Megane.

Though an SUV, this is not a car that will inspire you to take it straight away to Leh-Ladakh or for dune bashing at Thar. Rather it exudes the feeling of a comfortable family SUV which likes to spend more time On-Road rather Off the Road. The car has a fine blend of sharp detailing and a curvy design. The front is dominated by the family signature V-Shaped grill and reminds us of the big and brawny Nissan Patrol. The car has good visual presence without being flashy and has a lot of elements of the Nissan genre of SUVs.


The car has a pleasing to the eye interiors with quality stuff lavished all across. The car has a V-shaped center console finished in piano black with an infotainment system with a 7-unch display. All plastics are of high quality and the leather wrapped steering wheel is well shaped and pleasing to the eye. The leather seats are big and there are ample legroom and headroom at the rear as well as the front.

The Heart- Petrol+Electric Hybrid

Nissan X-Trail is powered by a Petrol-Electric FF Hybrid. It is a front wheel drive car with a petrol and electric motor under the hood. The petrol motor dispenses 142 bhp and 200 Nm of torque assisted by RM31 electric motor. The electric motor can generate a peak power of 40 bhp and 160 Nm of torque. This adds to an impressive 182 bhp and 300 Nm torque. The power is transmitted by a Dual Clutch Control system. The transmission duties are carried out by a CVT gearbox.

From a standstill, on a steady throttle input, the car takes off only on the electric power till around the speedo reaches the 30 kmph mark. This helps in conserving fuel in stop and go city traffic conditions. However if you want sudden progress, on aggressive throttle inputs the car uses both the power from the petrol and electric motor. The back and forth switching of petrol and electric motors are smooth and driver hardly feels the same.

Ride Comfort and Handling

The suspension is tuned for comfort rather than for sheer off-road ability or razor sharp handling. The brakes feels spongy, thanks to the regenerative braking system.

IBB Initial Verdict

Once launched, Nissan X-Trail will be the most eco-friendly SUV in the segment. The car has a comfortable and supple ride, convenience of a CVT and a well-finished interior with ample space and comfort. The car will only come with the petrol+ electric hybrid motor, in a segment where diesel rules the roost.  It is clear that with the new Nissan X-Trail, Nissan is not looking for big volumes. Nissan is looking to be portrayed as a manufacturer proficient of churning out a desirable and able SUV which has an eco-friendly heart under the hood.
